Cardiovascular services

Cardiovascular care

Our leading-edge catheterization labs have advanced imaging technology that aids our team in performing a number of diagnostic tests and treatments. Any time an abnormality or defect weakens your heart’s structure, it’s referred to as structural heart disease. We can treat this condition with traditional open-heart surgery or through several minimally invasive procedures.

Cardiovascular disease risk factors in women

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, accounting for one in three deaths annually. However, according to the World Heart Federation, up to 80% of heart attacks and strokes can be prevented through education and proactive lifestyle changes.

Women have unique cardiovascular risk and symptoms. Even healthy women are more susceptible than men to conditions such as SCAD and microvascular disease. Several factors can exacerbate a woman’s cardiovascular risk, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Family history
  • Kidney disease
  • Onset of menopause
  • Poorly-managed stress
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Smoking

Cardiovascular disease symptoms in women

There are differences in the way men and women experience cardiac events. When you think of a heart attack, symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath probably come to mind. But that’s not always the case for women.

Similar to men, the most common heart attack symptom in women is chest pain. However, not all women experience this. Women are more likely than men to have other, less obvious symptoms, including:

  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Heartburn
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach
  • Shortness of breath

Within our specialized women’s heart health program, our providers focus on the unique cardiovascular health needs of women in various stages of life.
